The Power of Positive Thinking: Does the Way We Think Really Influence Our Outcomes?

Have you ever stopped to listen to the conversations you have with yourself?

Not the conversations you have with friends, family, or colleagues—but the ones that happen quietly inside your own mind every day.

Many of us spend years repeating the same thoughts without even realising it:

"I'll never be good enough."

"I never have any luck."

"Things like that don't happen to people like me."

"I'll probably fail."

"Money is for other people, not me."

Over time, these thoughts can become beliefs, and those beliefs can quietly shape the way we live our lives.

Where Do These Beliefs Come From?

Many of our thought patterns begin in childhood.

Perhaps we grew up hearing phrases such as:

"Money doesn't grow on trees."

"Life's a struggle."

"You have to be realistic."

"Don't get your hopes up."

While these comments are often said with good intentions, they can become deeply rooted beliefs that stay with us into adulthood.

Without realising it, we can begin living within the limits of someone else's beliefs rather than creating our own.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Our brains are incredibly powerful.

If we constantly tell ourselves that we are unlucky, our minds naturally focus on evidence that supports that belief.

If we believe we are not confident, we may avoid opportunities that could help us grow.

If we tell ourselves that we aren't talented enough, we may never even try.

Imagine entering a competition while already convinced you won't win.

Imagine applying for a new job while believing you aren't good enough.

Imagine meeting someone new while expecting rejection.

In many cases, our thoughts influence our actions long before life has a chance to decide the outcome.

Why Successful People Think Differently

When we look at successful people, one thing often stands out.

They don't necessarily have fewer challenges than everyone else.

What they often have is a different mindset.

They see setbacks as lessons rather than failures.

They believe solutions exist even when they cannot yet see them.

They expect opportunities rather than constantly expecting problems.

This doesn't mean they are positive every minute of every day. It simply means they don't allow temporary setbacks to become permanent beliefs.

The Danger of Constant Comparison

Social media has made it easier than ever to compare ourselves to others.

We compare our appearance.

Our finances.

Our relationships.

Our achievements.

What we often forget is that we are comparing our everyday reality with someone else's highlight reel.

The more we compare ourselves, the easier it becomes to focus on what we think is missing from our lives.

Positive thinking isn't about pretending to be perfect. It's about appreciating your own journey rather than measuring it against someone else's.

The Energy Around Us Matters

Have you ever spent time with someone who constantly complains?

After a while, you may notice yourself feeling drained.

Likewise, spending time with positive, uplifting people often leaves us feeling motivated and inspired.

The energy we surround ourselves with matters.

The conversations we listen to matter.

The television programmes we watch matter.

Even the news we consume matters.

If we constantly fill our minds with fear, negativity and worst-case scenarios, it becomes easy to believe the world is an unsafe place.

Yet despite what we often see in headlines, most people are kind, caring and simply trying to do their best.

What we focus on grows.

The Energy We Broadcast

From a spiritual perspective, our thoughts are more than words. They carry energy.

The energy we hold influences how we feel, how we interact with others, and how we move through life.

If we constantly expect rejection, disappointment, or failure, we often unconsciously behave in ways that support those expectations.

Likewise, when we begin cultivating confidence, gratitude and optimism, we often notice new opportunities appearing around us.

Some people call this the Law of Attraction. Others call it mindset.

Whatever name we give it, there is wisdom in recognising that what we consistently focus on often expands within our experience.

The question is: what energy are you sending out into the world each day?

The Pain Cycle

Sometimes, without realising it, we can become so identified with our struggles that they begin to define who we are.

I have occasionally met people who speak about their pain, illness, or difficulties so often that it almost becomes part of their identity. Conversations can become centred around who is suffering the most or whose problems are the worst.

While it is important to acknowledge our challenges and seek support when needed, there comes a point where continually focusing on our suffering can keep us emotionally tied to it.

Healing often begins when we stop wearing our struggles as our identity and start recognising that we are so much more than the difficulties we face.

This becomes especially important when we experience physical or emotional pain.

Of course, acknowledging pain is important. Pretending it doesn't exist is neither healthy nor realistic.

However, there is a difference between recognising pain and becoming completely identified with it.

Many people find themselves repeating:

"I'm always in pain."

"My body will never heal."

"I'll never get better."

" Why me."

"Things will never change."

Over time, these thoughts can become part of our identity.

The mind begins to expect suffering, constantly searching for evidence that reinforces what we already believe.

This doesn't mean the pain isn't real. It simply means that alongside our reality, we can choose to introduce more supportive thoughts:

"My body is doing its best to heal."

"I am feeling better each day."

"Today may be a little better than yesterday."

Hope and healing often begin when we stop defining ourselves entirely by our struggles.

Positive Thinking Doesn't Mean Ignoring Reality

One of the biggest misunderstandings about positive thinking is that it means pretending everything is perfect.

It doesn't.

Life brings challenges to all of us.

We all experience disappointment, loss, frustration and setbacks.

Positive thinking simply means choosing not to stay stuck there.

When something doesn't go to plan, we can ask:

"What can I learn from this?"

"What's the next step forward?"

"How can this experience help me grow?"

Instead of remaining trapped in the problem, we begin looking for solutions.

My Own Journey

If someone had told me a few years ago that I would be running a successful Reiki and spiritual guidance business, I would never have believed them.

Like many people, I had my own limiting beliefs.

I questioned myself.

I doubted myself.

I wondered whether I was capable.

Through personal growth, energy work and Reiki healing, I became much more aware of the way I was speaking to myself.

I realised that many of my fears were not facts.

Many of my limitations existed only in my own thinking.

For years, I told myself what I couldn't do rather than focusing on what I could do. Looking back now, I realise that many of the barriers I faced were not outside of me but within my own beliefs. The moment I began challenging those beliefs, new possibilities began opening up.

As I began changing my thoughts, my confidence grew.

As my confidence grew, my actions changed.

And as my actions changed, so did my life.

Reiki and Thought Patterns

One thing I often notice during Reiki sessions is that people carry far more than physical tension.

Many carry years of worries, fears, self-doubt and limiting beliefs.

These thought patterns can become part of our energetic landscape.

Reiki helps create a space where people can relax, release what no longer serves them and reconnect with a more positive, balanced version of themselves.

While Reiki is not about forcing positive thinking, it can help us become more aware of the stories we have been carrying and whether those stories are still serving us.

Breaking Old Thought Patterns

The first step to changing a thought pattern is becoming aware of it.

Listen carefully to the way you speak to yourself throughout the day.

Ask yourself:

• Is this thought helping me?

• Would I say this to someone I love?

• Is this belief actually true?

• Where did this belief come from?

Many of the thoughts we carry are not facts. They are old stories, inherited beliefs, or fears that have simply been repeated for so long that they feel true.

Once you become aware of a limiting thought, try replacing it with something more empowering.

Not because you are pretending everything is perfect, but because you are consciously choosing which thoughts deserve your energy.

Small changes repeated consistently can create remarkable transformations over time.

Final Thoughts

The way we think may not control every event that happens in our lives, but it can influence how we respond to those events, the choices we make, and the opportunities we are willing to embrace.

Your thoughts become beliefs.

Your beliefs influence your actions.

Your actions help shape your future.

So perhaps the question is not:

"Why does this always happen to me?"

But rather:

"What new possibility could open up if I began thinking differently today?"

If there is one thing I have learned on my own journey, it is that we are often far more capable than we believe.

Many of the barriers we face are not always in the world around us, but in the stories we tell ourselves.

The moment we begin changing those stories, new possibilities can begin to unfold.

If you feel ready to release old patterns, build confidence, and move forward with greater clarity and purpose, I would be honoured to support you through Reiki healing and spiritual guidance.
