The Magic We Carry With Us

Why We Still Believe in Signs, Symbols & Superstitions

Have you ever touched wood after saying something positive?

Have you ever found a feather somewhere completely unexpected and wondered if it might mean something?

Perhaps you've spotted two magpies sitting together and immediately thought:

“One for sorrow, two for joy.”

Or maybe you've glanced at the clock and seen 11:11 yet again.

Coincidence?

A little bit of magic?

Or perhaps simply a reminder to stop and pay attention?

For centuries, people have looked for meaning in the world around them. We've created traditions, superstitions, symbols, rituals and stories to help us understand the things we cannot always explain.

Some have been passed down through families. Some have their roots in ancient folklore. Others are relatively modern spiritual beliefs.

And what's fascinating is that many of them are still part of our everyday lives.

So let's explore some of the little signs and traditions that have captured our imagination for generations.

🌳 Why Do We “Touch Wood”?

Let's begin with one almost everyone knows.

You say:

“I've had such a good run of luck lately...”

And almost automatically, you reach for something wooden.

“Touch wood.”

The tradition is generally associated with protecting good fortune or preventing us from tempting fate.

But where did it actually come from?

The honest answer is: we don't know for certain.

There are several theories.

One suggests that it may be connected with ancient beliefs surrounding sacred trees and the spirits believed to inhabit them. Another links the custom with Christian symbolism and the wood of the cross.

There are also theories involving older European folk traditions and games in which touching wood could provide a form of safety.

The expression itself is documented in Britain from the 19th century, but the custom may have older roots. The exact pathway from those earlier traditions to the phrase we use today remains uncertain.

And isn't that interesting?

We may not know exactly where it began...

Yet generations later, many of us still do it without even thinking.

🐦 One for Sorrow, Two for Joy

Now let's talk about magpies.

If you're anything like me, seeing one magpie can immediately make that old rhyme pop into your head:

One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret Never to be told.

There are actually many versions of the rhyme, and the older versions can be quite different.

The earliest known written versions date to around the late 18th century. Earlier British folklore already associated magpies with omens, and the rhyme eventually turned the number of birds you saw into a little fortune-telling system.

Some older versions had much darker meanings, while later versions became the familiar rhyme many of us know today.

And perhaps that's why people still count them.

One.

Two.

Three.

Suddenly, an ordinary bird becomes part of a story we've inherited from generations before us.

🪶 What About Finding a Feather?

This one feels particularly personal.

Of course, feathers are everywhere.

Birds moult. Feathers fall. We find them in gardens, parks and pavements.

But what about when you find one somewhere you genuinely didn't expect?

Perhaps you open your car door and there's a feather sitting on the driver's seat.

Perhaps you walk into a room and find one beside the doorway.

Perhaps you're thinking about someone you love, feeling emotional or asking for guidance — and then you notice a feather in an unusual place.

Is it definitely a spiritual message?

We can't prove that.

But does that mean the moment can't be meaningful?

Not at all.

Across modern spiritual traditions, feathers are often associated with ideas such as freedom, protection, comfort, spiritual connection and messages from the unseen.

But I think the most beautiful part is this:

You don't have to give a feather the same meaning as someone else.

If it makes you pause...

If it brings you comfort...

If it reminds you of someone...

If it makes you feel connected...

Then perhaps that personal meaning is what matters.

🪙 “Find a Penny, Pick It Up...”

Do you remember this one?

“Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you'll have good luck.”

There is something strangely satisfying about finding money on the ground.

Even if it's only 1p.

We pick it up.

We smile.

And perhaps we think:

“Well, that's lucky!”

Coins have long been associated with wealth, prosperity and good fortune, which may help explain why finding one can feel like a tiny unexpected blessing.

Perhaps we could even look at it another way.

Instead of asking whether the coin is literally bringing us luck, perhaps it reminds us to notice the little gifts that appear in our lives.

Sometimes abundance doesn't arrive dramatically.

Sometimes it's just a penny on the pavement.

🐴 Why Is a Horseshoe Lucky?

You may have seen a horseshoe hanging above a front door and wondered why.

The horseshoe has been regarded as a symbol of luck and protection for centuries, particularly in European folklore.

One reason for its protective reputation is connected with iron. In traditional folklore, iron was often believed to have protective qualities and was used to ward off unwanted spirits or negative influences.

Then there is the horseshoe itself.

A horseshoe was a practical object, essential for protecting a horse's hooves. Finding or receiving an old horseshoe could therefore have been considered a fortunate thing — particularly if it was found rather than deliberately purchased.

And then comes the interesting part...

Which way should you hang it?

Some traditions say the horseshoe should point upwards, creating a little cup to hold the good luck.

Others hang it with the ends pointing downwards, allowing the luck to pour down over everyone who passes beneath it.

So which one is right?

Perhaps both.

After all, there is something rather lovely about the idea of hanging a little symbol of protection and good fortune above the place where you enter your home.

Whether you believe the horseshoe brings luck or simply enjoy it as a piece of traditional folklore, it has certainly earned its place among the world's most recognisable lucky symbols. 🐴✨

🔢 What Do Angel Numbers Mean?

Now this is one I know many people ask about.

“I keep seeing 111. What does it mean?”

Or:

“Why do I keep seeing 222 everywhere?”

Repeating numbers such as 111, 222, 333, 444 and 555 are commonly called angel numbers within modern spiritual and numerological traditions.

They are generally interpreted as symbolic messages or gentle prompts to pause and pay attention.

There isn't one universally agreed meaning for every sequence, and angel numbers aren't a scientific system. They are a spiritual interpretation.

But these are some of the meanings most commonly associated with them:

✨ 111 — New Beginnings & Manifestation

Seeing 111 is commonly associated with new beginnings, fresh starts and paying attention to your thoughts and intentions.

It can be viewed as a reminder to consider:

“What am I focusing my energy on?”

It may encourage you to think positively about what you want to create and to recognise opportunities that may be opening.

✨ 222 — Balance, Trust & Relationships

222 is often associated with balance, harmony, partnership and patience.

If you're seeing 222 repeatedly, it may be a gentle reminder not to force everything.

Trust that some things need time.

It can also encourage you to look at where you may need greater balance in your life — emotionally, spiritually, physically or within relationships.

✨ 333 — Support, Growth & Creativity

333 is commonly connected with growth, encouragement, creativity and spiritual support.

For some people, seeing 333 feels like reassurance that they're not alone.

It can be a prompt to express yourself, trust your abilities and continue moving towards personal growth.

✨ 444 — Protection & Stability

444 is often interpreted as a symbol of protection, stability and strong foundations.

It can be a comforting number to notice when life feels uncertain.

Its message is often interpreted as:

“You are supported. Keep going.”

✨ 555 — Change & Transformation

If 555 keeps appearing, it is commonly associated with change, transition and transformation.

It doesn't necessarily mean something bad is about to happen.

Rather, it can be seen as encouragement to remain open to change and recognise when an old chapter is making way for something new.

✨ 666 — Rebalancing

Despite everything horror films have taught us, 666 has a very different interpretation within modern angel-number spirituality.

It is often associated with bringing yourself back into balance — particularly if you're becoming too focused on material concerns, fear or external pressures.

It can be a reminder to reconnect with your inner world.

✨ 777 — Spiritual Growth

777 is commonly associated with spiritual development, intuition, inner wisdom and deeper understanding.

Some people see it as an encouraging sign that they are becoming more connected to their spiritual path.

✨ 888 — Abundance & Prosperity

888 is often linked with abundance, success, prosperity and the flow of energy.

It can be interpreted as a reminder to recognise what is already flowing into your life while remaining open to new opportunities.

✨ 999 — Completion & New Chapters

999 is commonly associated with endings, completion and the closing of a chapter.

Rather than being something negative, it can represent making space for something new.

Sometimes an ending is simply the doorway to the next beginning.

🌟 And What About 11:11?

Of all the repeating numbers, 11:11 has become particularly famous.

It is often associated with spiritual awakening, alignment, manifestation and making a wish.

Some people deliberately pause when they see 11:11 and think about an intention or something they would like to bring into their lives.

Whether you see it as a spiritual sign or simply a beautiful little moment of synchronicity, perhaps the important thing is that it makes you stop and become present.

And that alone can be powerful.

🦋 Why Do Butterflies Feel So Magical?

Think about the journey of a butterfly.

It begins as a caterpillar.

It enters its chrysalis.

And eventually emerges completely transformed.

It's no surprise that butterflies have become such powerful symbols of transformation, freedom, change and new beginnings.

For someone going through a difficult period, seeing a butterfly can feel incredibly significant.

Perhaps it reminds them that transformation isn't always easy to see while we're going through it.

Sometimes we're still inside the chrysalis.

🌙 Does the Moon Affect Us?

For thousands of years, human beings have watched the Moon.

We've used its cycles to mark time, seasons and traditions.

And even today, many people feel particularly connected to the Moon.

Some people say they sleep differently around the full Moon.

Interestingly, there has been scientific research looking at this.

Some studies have reported changes in sleep around the full Moon, including reduced sleep duration or changes in deep sleep. However, research has not been completely consistent, so we can't say that the full Moon definitely causes sleep problems.

So if you feel that you don't sleep quite as well around a full Moon, you're certainly not the only person to notice it.

But what about the other famous full-Moon belief?

Does a full Moon make people more likely to commit crimes or become violent?

That's a much more complicated story.

The idea that full Moons cause strange behaviour — sometimes called the “lunar effect” — is an incredibly persistent belief.

However, research has generally not provided convincing evidence that a full Moon causes a general increase in violent crime.

A recent study examining almost 10,000 homicides over several decades found no statistically significant relationship between lunar phase and homicide frequency. Other population studies have similarly found no significant relationship between the full Moon and serious violent crime.

So perhaps the werewolves and midnight madness can remain firmly in the realm of folklore! 🌕🐺

Yet the fact that people have believed the Moon affects human behaviour for so long is fascinating in itself.

🕯️ Why Do We Make Wishes?

Think about a birthday.

The candles are lit.

Everyone gathers around.

You close your eyes.

You make a wish.

Then you blow.

It's such a familiar ritual that most of us never question it.

Across history, candles have been used in ceremonies, celebrations, prayers and rituals.

Today, blowing out birthday candles and making a wish has become a simple tradition — but there is something beautiful about what we're actually doing.

For a moment, we stop.

We close our eyes.

We imagine something we would like.

And we allow ourselves to hope.

Perhaps that's why rituals survive.

They give us a little moment of intention in an otherwise busy world.

🍀 The Little Things We Call Lucky

A four-leaf clover.

A horseshoe.

Crossed fingers.

A lucky charm.

A special piece of jewellery.

A particular number.

A favourite crystal.

Different cultures have created countless symbols of luck and protection.

Some have ancient roots.

Some are relatively modern.

And some may simply have become meaningful because generations of people have treated them as meaningful.

But perhaps that's part of the magic.

We take something ordinary...

And give it meaning.

✨ So Are These Things Really Signs?

This, to me, is the most fascinating question.

Is the feather simply a feather?

Is the coin simply a coin?

Is 11:11 simply the time?

Are two magpies simply two birds?

Is the butterfly simply passing through your garden?

Maybe.

And perhaps sometimes they are.

We don't have to deny the ordinary explanation in order to appreciate the spiritual one.

There is room for curiosity.

There is room for intuition.

There is room for coincidence.

And there is room for personal belief.

Perhaps the most important thing isn't whether someone else would call your experience a “sign”.

Perhaps it's what the moment means to you.

🌿 The Magic Around You

So the next time you find a feather...

Notice a coin...

See two magpies...

Spot a butterfly...

Catch 11:11 on the clock...

Or automatically reach for a wooden table after saying something positive...

Pause for a moment.

Take a breath.

Notice what you were thinking about.

Notice how you feel.

Ask yourself what the moment means to you.

Because perhaps spirituality doesn't always arrive with a dramatic message from the universe.

Sometimes it's much quieter.

Sometimes it's a tiny feather sitting on the seat of your car.

A penny glinting on the pavement.

A butterfly landing nearby.

Two magpies on a rooftop.

The Moon shining through your bedroom window.

Or a number appearing just when you needed a little reminder.

Perhaps the world has always been full of stories, symbols, traditions and little moments of wonder.

And perhaps part of our spiritual journey is simply learning to notice them.

The magic may not always be in the sign itself.

Sometimes, the magic is in the fact that we stopped to notice.

💜 A little question for you...

What sign, symbol, superstition or little coincidence has always fascinated you?

Perhaps you've found a feather at exactly the right moment.

Perhaps you always touch wood.

Perhaps you never see a single magpie without looking for another.

Or perhaps you've been seeing the same number everywhere and wondering what it means.

I'd love to hear about it.
