🌿 “That’s Just My Luck…”

The Stories We Tell Ourselves Without Realising It

How often have you heard yourself say…

“Typical.” “It’s always me.” “Why does this always happen to me?” “If anything is going to go wrong, it'll happen to me.” “That’s just my luck.” “Nothing ever goes right for me.”

Perhaps you've said some of these yourself.

And perhaps, like many of us, you've said them without really thinking about them. Sometimes we even laugh as we say them, almost as though they're harmless little expressions.

But have you ever stopped to think about the story you're telling yourself when you repeatedly use those words?

Because sometimes, a phrase we say often enough can start to become a belief.

🌱 When “just a saying” becomes a story

Imagine something goes wrong.

Perhaps you miss the bus, spill your coffee, receive an unexpected bill or have a disappointing day.

You might simply think:

“Oh, that's annoying.”

And then you move on.

But what if your immediate response is:

“Typical. That's just my luck.”

Then something else happens a few days later.

“See? I knew it. It's always me.”

And then another thing doesn't go according to plan.

“Nothing ever goes right for me.”

Before long, we're no longer simply describing individual events.

We're creating a story about ourselves.

I'm unlucky. Things always go wrong for me. I never get a break.

And because we repeat the story, it can begin to feel like a fact.

🧠 Our minds are very good at finding what we're looking for

This is where something called confirmation bias comes into play.

When we already believe something about ourselves or our lives, we're naturally more likely to notice things that confirm that belief.

If you've convinced yourself you're unlucky, you'll probably notice the day your car won't start.

You'll remember the appointment that was cancelled.

You'll notice the queue that took forever.

You'll remember the thing that went wrong.

But what about all the things that didn't go wrong?

The kind stranger who helped you.

The appointment that went smoothly.

The beautiful morning.

The unexpected good news.

The cup of tea someone made for you.

The little thing that worked out perfectly.

Those moments can become almost invisible because they don't fit the story we've already decided is true.

And this is why becoming aware of our thoughts can be so powerful.

🌸 The language we use matters

This doesn't mean our words are magical spells.

It doesn't mean that if you say “I'm unlucky” three times, the universe will suddenly send something awful your way!

Life doesn't work like that.

Bad things happen. Disappointments happen. Things sometimes go completely wrong — and none of that means you caused them by having the wrong thought.

But the way we talk to ourselves can influence the way we interpret what happens next.

There's a big difference between:

“Something went wrong today.”

and:

“Everything always goes wrong for me.”

The first describes an experience.

The second creates an identity.

And that's a very important difference.

✨ So, what about manifestation?

If you're someone who believes in manifestation, you may have wondered whether repeatedly saying “I'm unlucky” means you're actually manifesting more bad luck.

I don't believe we should look at it that way.

We shouldn't blame ourselves for difficult experiences by saying:

“I attracted this.” “I manifested this.” “It happened because I was thinking negatively.”

That's not helpful — and it can be incredibly unfair, particularly when someone is going through something genuinely difficult.

Perhaps a more useful way to look at it is this:

What we repeatedly focus on can influence what we notice, what we expect and how we respond.

If you constantly expect something to go wrong, you may become more alert to problems.

You may interpret situations more negatively.

You may overlook opportunities because you're already expecting disappointment.

And you may unconsciously carry yourself through life waiting for the next thing to go wrong.

So perhaps manifestation isn't always about creating the event.

Perhaps sometimes it's about becoming conscious of where we're placing our attention, our expectations and our energy.

🌿 Changing the pattern

The good news is that we don't have to completely transform our thinking overnight.

We can start with something very simple:

Notice it.

The next time you hear yourself say:

“That's just my luck.”

Pause.

Take a breath.

And ask yourself:

“Is that actually true — or is this just one thing that hasn't gone the way I wanted?”

Then try giving yourself a different thought.

Instead of:

“That's just my luck.”

Try:

“This didn't go the way I hoped, but it's only one moment.”

Instead of:

“Nothing ever goes right for me.”

Try:

“Things haven't gone right lately, but that doesn't mean they won't.”

Instead of:

“Why me?”

Try:

“What can I do with what is happening right now?”

Instead of:

“Typical!”

Try:

“Okay… that wasn't ideal. Onwards and upwards from here”

Instead of:

“I knew something would go wrong.”

Try:

“That didn't go quite to plan. That doesn't mean everything else will go wrong.”

These might seem like tiny changes.

But sometimes tiny changes in the way we speak to ourselves can create a very different internal conversation.

💗 You don't have to force yourself to be

positive

This is important.

Changing negative thought patterns doesn't mean walking around pretending everything is wonderful.

You don't have to say:

“Everything happens for a reason!”

when you're having an awful day.

You don't have to put a positive spin on something that genuinely hurts.

And you certainly don't have to blame yourself when life throws something difficult your way.

Instead, we're simply learning to become more balanced in the way we speak to ourselves.

You can acknowledge:

“This is difficult.”

without adding:

“And everything always goes wrong for me.”

You can say:

“I'm disappointed.”

without deciding:

“I'm just unlucky.”

You can have a bad day without deciding that you have a bad life.

And you can experience something going wrong without allowing it to become the story of who you are.

🌙 A little Healing Haven challenge

For the next few days, try becoming aware of the phrases you automatically use when something doesn't go your way.

Listen for:

“Typical.” “Why me?” “It's always me.” “That's just my luck.” “I knew that would happen.” “Nothing ever goes right.”

You don't need to judge yourself when you notice them.

Just notice.

Then pause and ask:

“Is there another way I could describe this?”

You might be surprised by how often these little phrases appear once you start listening for them.

And perhaps you'll also begin noticing something else…

The things that do go right.

The little moments of kindness.

The unexpected opportunities.

The beautiful coincidences.

The things you once would have overlooked because you were too busy waiting for the next problem.

✨ Your thoughts aren't your destiny

We all have negative thoughts.

We all have moments when we think “Oh, for goodness' sake!” or “Why is this happening to me?”

That's being human.

The goal isn't to never have a negative thought again.

It's to recognise that a thought is a thought — not necessarily a fact.

You can notice it.

Question it.

And choose whether you want to keep feeding it.

🌱 You don't have to pretend everything is positive.

🌱 You don't have to blame yourself for what goes wrong.

🌱 You don't have to believe that every difficult experience is something you've manifested.

But you can become more conscious of the stories you tell yourself.

Because when we change “This always happens to me” into “This happened today, and I'll deal with it”, we create a little more space for possibility.

And sometimes, that little bit of space is where change begins.

💫 A final thought from Healing Haven

You are not your worst day.

You are not your mistakes.

You are not your disappointments.

And you are certainly not defined by whether you've had a run of good luck or bad luck.

So the next time you catch yourself saying:

“That's just my luck…”

perhaps take a breath and gently remind yourself:

“This is just one moment. It doesn't have to become my story.” 🌸
