Are You Really Shy… Or Just Energetically Sensitive?

Have you ever wanted to be invited somewhere…but also found yourself making excuses in your head about why you might not go?

Do you sometimes feel lonely at home — yet completely drained after socialising?

Do you replay conversations in your head afterwards, wondering if you said the wrong thing?

If so, you may not be “awkward”, antisocial, or difficult.

You may simply be energetically sensitive.

The Quiet Struggles Many Introverts Don’t Talk About

Being introverted isn’t just about liking quiet evenings.

For many people, it can feel like:

• Wanting connection, but needing solitude• Enjoying social events, but feeling exhausted afterwards• Feeling overwhelmed in busy or noisy environments• Absorbing other people’s moods without meaning to• Thinking deeply — sometimes overthinking

It can be confusing.

You might crave company and feel left out when you’re not included…but when you are included, your nervous system feels overloaded.

This push and pull can create guilt, frustration, and even self-judgement.

It’s Not a Flaw — It’s Sensitivity

Many introverted people have highly responsive nervous systems.

Loud environments, strong personalities, emotional tension in a room — it all registers deeply.

That doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

It means your system processes more.

When you understand this, everything begins to make more sense.

My Own Personal Experience

There was a time in my life when I would never have imagined doing what I do today.

Becoming a Reiki Master and working with people every day would have felt completely out of reach.

Growing up, I was very shy. I lacked confidence and often felt overwhelmed — especially in crowds or busy environments. Anxiety was something I lived with quietly.

Social situations could feel intense. If I went to the theatre, I would always choose a seat near the aisle so I could leave easily if I needed to. I’d scan rooms for the nearest exit. I would sometimes create excuses in my head in case I decided not to attend something.

I wanted connection — but I also felt overloaded by it.

For a long time, I coped in ways that I believed were helping me. Having a drink before going out seemed to take the edge off. Gradually, that coping mechanism became a habit. I found myself drinking when I was happy, when I was sad, when I was bored — almost for any occasion.

At the time, it felt like support.

Looking back, I can see it was avoidance.

Eventually, after a lot of soul-searching, I realised I didn’t want to live in that cycle anymore. I didn’t want to rely on something external just to feel comfortable in my own skin.

That was when I booked my first Reiki session.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. After the first session, I felt calmer — but I still questioned it. So I went back again.

Within a few sessions, something began to shift.

I felt steadier. Clearer. Less reactive. Less overwhelmed.

I started to understand that my nervous system had been living in protection mode for years.

Reiki helped me feel safe in my own body.

That safety changed everything.

The more I learned about energy and healing, the more I wanted to understand it. That curiosity eventually led me to train, and over time, to become a Reiki Master myself.

If you had told the younger version of me that I would one day speak openly, support others, and build a healing practice, I wouldn’t have believed you.

But when your nervous system feels safe, confidence grows naturally.

You Don’t Need to Become Someone Else

The goal isn’t to “fix” introversion.

It’s to understand your energy.

When you learn how to regulate your nervous system and protect your energy, social situations feel less overwhelming.

You recover more quickly.

You trust yourself more.

And you stop judging your need for quiet.

Supporting Sensitive Nervous Systems

In my Reiki sessions — whether in person in Northampton or through distant sessions — many clients describe feeling:

• Calmer• Lighter• More centred• Less emotionally overloaded

When the body feels safe, confidence grows naturally.

Not forced.

Not performed.

Simply allowed.

If you recognise yourself in this, please know:

There is nothing wrong with you.

You are not “too much". You are not “not enough”.

You may simply be a sensitive soul learning how to thrive in a busy world 🤍
